WhatsApp for Odoo
Customer chats over the official WhatsApp Business API, inside Odoo Discuss, on Odoo Community.
The problem
Odoo’s own WhatsApp app is part of Enterprise. Businesses on Odoo Community had to choose between third-party services with a monthly fee and unofficial links through a phone. We wanted WhatsApp chats inside Odoo, on Community, over the official connection.
What we built
Customers write to your business number and the conversation appears in Odoo Discuss, linked to their contact. Anyone in the team can reply, send a photo or a PDF, and see when the message was delivered and read. Several numbers can live in one database — sales, support, each shop — and every message is answered from the number it was sent to.

Technology
The module adds WhatsApp to Odoo Community through Meta’s official WhatsApp Business connection, not an unofficial workaround. It is built on open-source modules from the Odoo Community Association, which we brought to Odoo 19, fixed and extended. Before release it passes 42 automated checks on a fresh test database, and it was tested with real numbers on our own test server, never on a live system.
For technical readers: Python and JavaScript (Odoo 19 Community); Meta WhatsApp Business Cloud API and webhooks; OCA mail_gateway and mail_gateway_whatsapp; licence AGPL-3.
What was hard
- The first message from a new number was refused. When a customer writes for the first time, the module creates a new conversation and adds your team to it. Odoo 19 checks those changes against the user of the incoming web request — for Meta’s webhook, the anonymous public user — so the conversation could not be created. We traced the error, and the module now switches to the gateway’s own technical user right after Meta’s signature is verified.
- Keeping the access keys safe. The WhatsApp access token and the app secret give full control of your number. We restricted the access keys to administrators only.
- Several numbers on one Meta app. Messages for every number arrived at one address and were answered from one number. We now route each message by Meta’s phone-number ID to the right number and team.
Result and status
Ready for clients: version 1.2.0 for Odoo 19 Community, 42 automated tests passing on a fresh database, tested with real numbers on our test server. What we added: delivery and read ticks (sent, delivered, read), Meta’s error reason with a Retry button, a set-up screen with a connection test, and a written set-up guide.
